Power Failure Sends Mexican Navy Ship Crashing Into Brooklyn Bridge
A catastrophic maritime accident unfolded on Saturday evening when a Mexican Navy sailboat carrying 277 people collided with the Brooklyn Bridge. The dramatic crash killed two individuals and left more than a dozen injured, sending shockwaves across the New York City waterfront as emergency services rushed to the scene.
The New York Police Department reported that the incident occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. The sailboat had been navigating away from Pier 17 en route to Iceland when it lost power. The sudden mechanical failure made it impossible for the captain to steer, and strong currents forced the vessel into the bridge's pillar.
According to NYPD Chief Wilson Aramboles, the impact occurred at the point where several sailors were stationed, leading to serious injuries. The mast, adorned with festive lights, struck the underside of the bridge with immense force, causing panic onboard and among witnesses nearby. Videos captured by onlookers revealed the chaos as the ship’s structure was mangled in seconds.
Mayor Eric Adams confirmed early Sunday that two individuals died as a result of the crash. City officials said four people sustained severe injuries and were transported to local hospitals. Despite the tragic losses, no one was thrown into the water, and responders quickly brought the situation under control.
Witnesses described a terrifying scene of confusion and terror. Members of the crew were spotted hanging from the masts in the aftermath, and some passengers were visibly shaken. Emergency medical teams, fire crews, and police units coordinated efforts to treat the injured and evacuate the ship safely.
Preliminary inspections of the Brooklyn Bridge determined that there was no structural damage, despite the heavy impact. The bridge, which had been temporarily closed to traffic, was reopened just after midnight. Officials from the New York City Department of Transportation said additional inspections would be carried out to confirm the initial findings.
The National Transportation Safety Board is now investigating the incident. Officials believe a mechanical failure caused the loss of control, but further analysis is necessary to determine whether all safety protocols were followed and what preventive measures might be needed in the future.
Mayor Adams thanked the first responders for their swift action and extended condolences to the victims and their families. He emphasized the importance of uncovering the root cause of the accident and vowed to support those affected as the investigation continues. The city remains alert, hoping such a tragedy won’t repeat itself.
