Tragedy at Estadio Monumental: Two Fans Killed Amid Chaos Before Colo Colo Match
What was supposed to be an exciting night of football turned tragic when two fans died in a chaotic incident outside Estadio Monumental in Santiago ahead of the Copa Libertadores clash between Colo Colo and Fortaleza. A local prosecutor confirmed the deaths on Thursday, revealing the situation quickly escalated as crowds attempted to gain entry into the stadium.
The turmoil began when a group of fans forced their way through security fencing, trying to enter the venue without authorization. The pressure of the crowd caused the fencing to collapse, crushing several individuals beneath it. Authorities confirmed that two fans were fatally injured in the chaos, while others sustained varying degrees of harm.
Eastern Flagrancy Prosecutor Francisco Morales explained that the breach occurred through Casa Alba, a structure adjacent to the stadium. Despite police efforts to block the unauthorized entry, a stampede broke out, leading to the tragic collapse. Investigators are also examining whether a police vehicle may have contributed to the deadly incident.
Officials reported that one of the victims died on the scene, while the other passed away after being taken to a nearby medical clinic. Although the match proceeded as scheduled, the tragedy deeply affected the atmosphere around the game, overshadowing what was meant to be a thrilling contest between two prominent South American clubs.
Tensions within the stadium later erupted during the 70th minute of play. With the score still tied 0-0, a segment of Colo Colo fans began throwing objects onto the field in apparent protest. It remains uncertain whether these actions were in direct response to the deaths outside, but the disruption added another layer of disorder to the night.
In response to the escalating unrest, Fortaleza players rushed to the locker room for safety, while Colo Colo players, including captain Esteban Pavez and veteran Arturo Vidal, attempted to deescalate the crowd. Ultimately, Uruguayan referee Gustavo Tejera called off the match, informing both teams of the suspension due to safety concerns.
CONMEBOL, South America’s football governing body, released a statement expressing sorrow over the deaths. “We deeply regret the death of two fans near the Estadio Monumental before the start of the match between Colo Colo and Fortaleza,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with their families and loved ones during this difficult time.”
