Breakthrough in Gaza: Hamas to Free Last American Hostage in Humanitarian Gesture

Hamas has announced it will soon release Edan Alexander, the final known American hostage alive in Gaza, marking a hopeful development amid ongoing efforts to de-escalate the conflict. This step comes after recent contact with the U.S. government, described by Hamas as extremely positive and constructive, potentially paving the way for a broader ceasefire agreement.

According to Khalil Al-Hayya, head of Hamas’ negotiating team, the group is ready to begin immediate and serious negotiations with the goal of ending the war. Their plan includes an agreed prisoner swap and transition of Gaza’s administration to a neutral, professional authority that could stabilize the war-torn region.

The Alexander family expressed overwhelming gratitude on Mother’s Day, calling the news “the greatest gift imaginable.” They extended their thanks to President Donald Trump, envoy Steve Witkoff, and other U.S. officials who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to help secure Edan’s release after months of uncertainty and anxiety.

President Trump called the development “monumental” in a post on Truth Social, describing it as a good-faith gesture by Hamas. He acknowledged the diplomatic roles played by Egypt and Qatar, and pledged continued commitment to bringing home all American hostages and returning the remains of the deceased to their families.

Though Alexander’s release could happen as early as Monday, sources familiar with the talks believe Tuesday is more likely. Remarkably, Israel is not offering any prisoner exchange in return, leading some observers to interpret the release as a humanitarian act rather than a bargaining move in the larger conflict.

Mahmoud Mardawi, a senior Hamas official, said on Hamas-linked Al Aqsa TV that they engaged in direct talks with the United States regarding resuming humanitarian aid. Meanwhile, Witkoff told that the discussions were indirect, though effective. He plans to land in Tel Aviv Monday morning to oversee the operation.

Adam Boehler, U.S. Special Envoy for Hostage Response, will accompany Edan’s parents, Adi and Yael Alexander, to Israel. He confirmed their arrival on Monday and credited Trump, Rubio, and Witkoff with placing significant focus on Edan’s case. He did not disclose negotiation details but noted the tone of talks had been promising.

In a closed Knesset meeting, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu informed lawmakers of Hamas’ decision to release Alexander without any preconditions. Later, his office released a statement confirming the same, adding that negotiations for additional hostage releases would continue under active conflict conditions if necessary, emphasizing Israel’s cautious optimism.

The Hostages and Missing Families Forum called the release a significant step but demanded broader action. They urged Prime Minister Netanyahu to fulfill his moral obligation to retrieve all hostages and praised President Trump for giving families a renewed sense of hope during one of the most difficult times in recent memory.

Currently, 59 hostages are believed to still be held in Gaza. Trump recently claimed only 21 remain alive, a figure that differs from Israel’s official count of 24. Netanyahu later admitted that there are three hostages whose status is uncertain, adding further urgency to efforts to secure accurate information and negotiate effectively.

Among those killed are four American citizens: married couple Gadi and Judi Haggai, and soldiers Itay Chen and Omer Neutra. U.S. Ambassador Mike Huckabee labeled hostage return the top priority for President Trump in relation to Israel. The administration’s determination remains firm as diplomatic and humanitarian channels continue working in tandem.

Hamas has said Alexander’s release is tied to opening humanitarian access to Gaza, which has been under full Israeli blockade since March 2. The UN and aid groups report critical shortages in medicine, fuel, and food. World Chef Kitchen said they’ve stopped cooking due to supply depletion and are focusing on clean water delivery.
