Elon Musk has officially ended his temporary role in the Trump administration, stepping away from his position at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). His announcement was made through a post on his social media platform X, where he expressed gratitude to Donald Trump for the opportunity. Musk’s departure, though expected due to legal time limits, has garnered attention due to its timing—just one day after he criticized Trump’s latest budget proposal.

As a “special government employee,” Musk was legally allowed to serve in his federal position for up to 130 days per year. That limit was set to be reached by late May, as measured from Trump’s inauguration. However, Musk’s sudden resignation raised eyebrows, especially after his harsh remarks about the administration’s financial agenda. He called Trump’s budget plan disappointing and said it could increase the federal deficit significantly.

Musk's criticism focused on the proposed multi-trillion dollar tax cuts and increased defense spending, arguing they clashed with DOGE's goal of fiscal restraint. He claimed the budget “undermines the work” of the department. In an interview with CBS, Musk said, “A bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don’t think it can be both.” This sentiment illustrated his growing disconnect from the administration's broader direction.

During his tenure, Musk launched an aggressive cost-cutting campaign aimed at reducing federal expenditures. Initially pledging to slash $2 trillion from the budget, he later reduced that target to $150 billion. The plan resulted in the elimination or early retirement of around 260,000 federal workers from a total civilian workforce of approximately 2.3 million. The cuts were controversial and sparked public outcry in many sectors.

The downsizing was not without error. Judges halted certain mass layoffs, ruling them unlawful and demanding the reinstatement of affected employees. Some workers critical to national programs, including those in the nuclear sector, were accidentally terminated. These mistakes exposed flaws in the execution of DOGE’s cost-saving initiatives and fed criticism that the agency’s methods were reckless and poorly managed.

Musk also struggled with internal conflicts, reportedly clashing with several of Trump’s cabinet-level officials. In a conversation with the Washington Post, Musk expressed frustration that DOGE was being blamed for problems it didn’t cause. “Something bad would happen anywhere, and we would get blamed for it even if we had nothing to do with it,” he said, highlighting the scapegoating he believed DOGE experienced.

Amid the growing backlash, Musk began signaling his exit. In late April, he stated his intent to refocus on his companies, particularly Tesla and SpaceX. Tesla’s sales had begun to drop during his government stint, and analysts speculated that Musk’s alignment with Trump may have alienated some customers. His departure was seen as a way to stabilize his business and public image.

Despite the rocky path, Musk remained proud of the DOGE initiative. In his farewell message, he stated that the mission would outlast his government role, evolving into a core principle of how the federal system should operate. He maintained that reducing wasteful spending is essential and thanked Trump for trusting him with the challenge.
