Jumbo Breaks Records While Spreading a Message of Empathy and Courage

The film Jumbo has taken the Indonesian box office by storm, attracting over 7.6 million viewers and securing the position as the third highest-grossing local film of all time. Shown in cinemas nationwide, the movie follows Don, a young boy trying to prove himself to a child who bullies him. The story is not just about self-discovery—it also delivers a meaningful message about empathy and kindness, as emphasized by the film’s director and writer, Ryan Adriandhy.

During a special screening event with Binus International at CGV FX Sudirman in Central Jakarta on April 29, 2025, Ryan highlighted the importance of empathy as the film's core value. He shared that children should be encouraged to listen to and respect all beings, both human and otherwise. According to him, kindness is universal, and as social creatures, people thrive through their connections with others.

Ryan explained that the inspiration for Jumbo stemmed from the childhood experiences of its creators, including his own. He stressed the need to provide children with a safe emotional space, where they can grow into bold and confident individuals. Creating such an environment, he said, helps children face the world without fear and with a stronger sense of identity.

In addition to themes of courage and kindness, Jumbo tackles the persistent problem of bullying among children. Ryan believes the film serves as a timely reminder that acceptance of others and empathy should be taught from an early age. Through Don’s journey, young audiences are encouraged to understand different perspectives and support one another despite differences.

While Jumbo is undoubtedly a commercial triumph, its greatest achievement may lie in the lessons it imparts. By blending personal stories with a socially relevant message, the film resonates deeply with audiences of all ages. Its success proves that a powerful message—when wrapped in an engaging story—can reach millions and inspire meaningful change.
