Russia Unleashes Deadly Onslaught on Kharkiv Amid Rising War Tensions
Russia intensified its military campaign against Ukraine by launching a severe assault on Kharkiv early Saturday. The attack, which left at least three people dead, was described by Kharkiv Mayor Igor Terekhov as the most powerful the city has seen since the beginning of the full-scale invasion.
The barrage came just one day after Russia executed one of its largest aerial offensives during the war, apparently in retaliation for a daring Ukrainian drone attack that disabled a substantial portion of Moscow’s strategic missile forces. The frequency and scale of Russian strikes appear to be escalating.
Kharkiv, located just 30 kilometers from the Russian border, was rocked by more than 40 explosions, according to local officials. Flames engulfed a multi-story apartment building in the Osnovyanskyi district, where two civilians were killed. Another life was lost in a separate attack in the Kyivskyi district.
Footage released by emergency responders showed the extent of the destruction, as firefighters battled intense flames and searched for survivors. Ukrainian officials condemned the assault, calling it another example of Russia’s relentless aggression against civilians and urban centers.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed the strikes hit military targets and achieved all intended objectives. However, Ukrainian prosecutors reported damage to non-military buildings such as a music school and a government office, suggesting civilian infrastructure bore the brunt of the attacks.
Among the injured were a 14-year-old girl and an infant boy who reportedly experienced acute stress. Heart-wrenching stories emerged from survivors, including a woman who saw her daughter trapped under rubble and another resident who described a fatal hit on a neighbor’s home.
Diplomatic friction also flared as the Kremlin accused Ukraine of postponing a scheduled exchange of prisoners of war and fallen soldiers. Russian negotiator Vladimir Medinsky claimed Ukraine’s delegation failed to show up, putting the process on hold indefinitely.
Ukraine disputed these claims, calling them false and misleading. Meanwhile, Ukraine’s air force said it had downed a Russian Su-35 fighter jet near the Kursk region. While Russia did not officially respond, military blogs reported the aircraft’s loss and the pilot’s survival.
