Mounting Crisis in Gaza Draws Global Alarm Over Israel’s Actions

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is growing more dire, as Israeli airstrikes have claimed the lives of at least 100 people in a single day, according to rescue teams on the ground. The escalation has drawn fierce condemnation from the United Nations, with its top human rights official accusing Israel of actions resembling ethnic cleansing due to continued bombardments and the blocking of aid.

UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk expressed grave concern on Saturday, saying the bombing campaign and Israel’s continued refusal to allow humanitarian supplies into Gaza appear to signal an intent to enforce permanent demographic change. Turk declared this a violation of international law and akin to ethnic cleansing, according to reports from AFP.

The fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, which held for two months, collapsed in early March following Israel’s sudden decision to reimpose a full blockade on Gaza. This blockade immediately cut off vital supplies such as food, clean water, medicine, and fuel, pushing Gaza’s already strained population toward the brink of famine.

Israeli military forces have intensified operations throughout Gaza, with reports from Israeli media confirming that offensive actions have increased significantly. Volker Turk warned that the scope and brutality of the attacks raise alarms over possible forthcoming military campaigns of even greater magnitude and devastation.

“Time must be stopped on this madness,” Turk urged, calling upon all involved parties and particularly nations with direct influence over the conflict to exert pressure and put an end to the violence. The humanitarian situation is rapidly spiraling beyond control, he added.

Friday’s strikes, which resulted in over 100 deaths, came as Hamas appealed to the United States to force Israel to lift the blockade on humanitarian aid. Hamas insists that continued access to food and medicine is critical for civilian survival amid the chaos of ongoing warfare.

The United States has acknowledged the suffering of Palestinian civilians, with President Donald Trump admitting that many are facing starvation due to the siege. Trump suggested that the U.S. must now become more actively involved in resolving the crisis to prevent a broader humanitarian catastrophe.

Israel defends its blockade and intensified strikes as a strategy to pressure Hamas into making concessions. Since the October 7, 2023 attack, Hamas has held dozens of Israeli hostages, and Tel Aviv insists that their release must precede any easing of restrictions.

One breakthrough occurred earlier this week when Hamas released Edan Alexander, the last American citizen believed to be alive among the hostages. In response, senior Hamas official Taher al-Nunu stated that the group hopes the U.S. government will follow through by pressing Israel to reopen crossings and allow urgent humanitarian relief to flow into Gaza.
