Austria Mourns as Graz School Shooting Leaves Nine Dead, Including Teens

Austria has been left in shock after a deadly school shooting in the city of Graz claimed the lives of nine people. The tragic event occurred at Bundesoberstufenrealgymnasium Dreierschützengasse, one of the city's high schools.

The attack unfolded on Tuesday morning around 10 a.m. local time, when multiple gunshots were reported at the school. Police responded immediately, arriving at the scene with several vehicles and even deploying a helicopter to secure the area.

Law enforcement quickly evacuated the building and confirmed that there was no longer a threat. Authorities stated that the shooter had died and the school premises were now safe from further harm.

Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker expressed his sorrow in a public statement, describing the shooting as a national tragedy. He said the loss of young lives had deeply shaken the nation to its core.

“The rampage at a school in Graz is a national tragedy that has deeply shaken our entire country,” Stocker wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “There are no words for the pain and grief.”

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen also shared her condolences, stating that schools should never become places of violence and mourning. Her comments echoed the heartbreak felt across Europe.

Gun violence is not common in Austria, which is known for its relatively low firearm homicide rate. In 2021, Austria recorded only 0.1 firearm deaths per 100,000 people, far below the global average.

Nonetheless, Austria does have one of the highest civilian gun ownership rates in the European Union. According to the Small Arms Survey, there are 30 civilian-owned firearms for every 100 citizens in the country.

Though rare, Austria has witnessed several isolated incidents of violence in recent years. Just last October, a mayor and another person were shot dead in a separate case that made national headlines.

Another violent incident occurred in February when a 23-year-old man randomly stabbed five people in southern Austria. These events have added urgency to ongoing conversations about public safety and mental health care.

The Graz shooting has reignited national debates over school security measures, mental health services, and Austria’s gun policies. Officials are calling for comprehensive reviews to prevent future tragedies.

Grief counselors have been deployed to support affected students, teachers, and families in Graz. Vigils and memorials are already being planned as the community seeks to honor the victims.
