Putin Stays Neutral as Israel-Iran Hostilities Deepen with Strikes, Spies, and Nuclear Concerns

Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke out on the intensifying conflict between Iran and Israel during a roundtable in Saint Petersburg. He clarified that Russia had no intention of forcing a resolution but was simply proposing ideas for peace. According to Putin, decisions about the conflict should be made by the political leaders of Iran and Israel themselves.

Asked whether Iran had approached Russia for support, Putin stated that his Iranian counterparts had made no such request. His response reflects Russia’s current position of neutrality and unwillingness to interfere unless formally invited. This stance comes as both Iran and Israel increase their rhetoric and actions against each other.

In Iran, a crackdown on alleged Israeli espionage has led to a wave of arrests. Iran's Police Commander Ahmad Reza Radan announced that authorities had made “heavy blows” to a Mossad-linked spy network. One suspect affiliated with Israel’s intelligence agency was captured in the western province of Kordestan.

The Iranian government has detained an unspecified number of individuals across multiple provinces, including Tehran, Isfahan, and Markazi. These arrests come amid heightened tension following Israeli strikes and reflect Iran’s push to root out any internal threats. The exact nature of the evidence against the detainees remains unclear.

A separate case drew attention when Iranian outlets reported the arrest of a foreign national accused of filming the Bushehr nuclear plant. Authorities believe the individual was acting on behalf of Mossad. Iranian officials have not yet released the person’s nationality, further fueling speculation and concern over foreign espionage.

Iran’s Attorney General’s Office issued a warning that anyone found cooperating with Israel would be subject to the country’s harshest legal penalties. That warning was swiftly followed by the execution of a man convicted of spying for Mossad. The execution underscores Iran’s tough stance on espionage during this period of heightened conflict.

On the Israeli side, military forces have launched airstrikes against more than 20 targets in Tehran. The Israel Defense Forces claimed the targets included critical nuclear and missile sites, which they allege support Iran’s weapons development and attacks on Israel. Israeli defense systems have also been used to intercept missiles from Iran.

Meanwhile, U.S. politics have become entangled in the crisis, as former President Donald Trump insisted Iran was nearing nuclear capability. His comments conflicted with testimony from his former intelligence chief, Tulsi Gabbard, who said Iran had not restarted its nuclear weapons program since halting it in 2003. Trump dismissed her statement, maintaining his belief in Iran’s nuclear threat.
